  • Lane Driving is inSane Driving!

There is a 90km roadtrip that I do every day for work, and pass by a bottleneck which was initially supposed to be a flyover to ease traffic movement! Please welcome the RTR Flyover, or Rao Tula Ram Flyover!
Delhi has its fair share of flyovers, and they have really helped the traffic movement! The number of vehicles increasing is what causes the jams! not these flyovers! This one however has a history!
When RTR was inaugurated, traffic was allowed to move from Subroto Park/Gurgaon/Airports towards RK Puram! Someone in the Delhi Traffic Police realised that it was causing way too many jams, and reversed the traffic flow… So now this 3 lane flyover was for people moving from RK Puram/Vasant Vihar/Munirka towards Subroto Park/Gurgaon/Airports, and started causing the jam on the other side!
Some more brainstorming made it a time bound flyover… mornings one side, and evenings the other side! So jams now moved from one side to the other!
And finally, they have now allowed traffic from both sides to use the flyover, the middle lane is used as a the imaginary median, and there is enough space kept at the entry for a single lane traffic on both sides!
All of these approaches had their followers and critics both, but what boggles me at times is that why could they not build a wider flyover like the 1000s others in Delhi!

But this post is not about what you have just read! this post is about what you are going to read, if you have reached this far!
There is a trick to get onto the RTR… I have labelled the approaching traffic lanes as
    1. Sharafat Lane (This is the right most lane)
    2. Badmash Lane (Second to the right most)
    3. Badtameez Lane (Third/Fourth to the right most)
    4. Pencho Lane (Any other lane)
Now as the names suggest, the Sharafat lane is the slowest of them all… If you are stuck here, you are probably going to enter the flyover after 3 vehicles from Pencho Lane, 2-3 from Badtameez Lane, and 2 from Badtameez Lane have zoomed past… Let’s see how this looks like from the top usually!

Numbers do play an important roles in our lives! We do like to related numbers with future, past and present! And there never is a shortage of numbers of you are interested!
I like numbers too! Love them rather! Driving for over 3 hours everyday gives me an opportunity to think about a lot of numbers..
~ How many cars overtook me!
~ How many vehicles did I pass?
~ How many flyovers in my way?
~ How many times I end up in the lane slower than the right and left side lanes on the toll bridge?
~ How many times I honked?
~ How many time I was the last person to cross the traffic light before it turned red?
And some more numbers on my desk!
    1. How many keys do I press everyday?
    2. How many meters does my mouse move everyday?
It kind of moves a couple of cms every 15 seconds… lets assume two centimeters every 15 seconds, making it about 8 centimeters every minute on an average which means about 480 cms every hour, and in the entire working day of 8 hours I move my mouse for about 3840 cms or 38.40 meters! Not bad for everyday workout 😀
  • Bees on the Road!

We humans are animals! and some of us insects! and I am not saying it in a derogatory way! Its the characteristics which are common and are hard to ignore!!!

    e.g.
Most drivers in India are like Bees, and in the west are like sheep!!! Try to visualize any road from the top… and what you would see is a pattern within the patternless driving… one car moving from one lane to the another trying to occupy the space which just got freeed, while the space also seems to be moving from one lane to the other! The red lights and the toll gates, putting a break to the bees, I mean, cars, and then suddenly the same patternless pattern repeats! I would love to study these patterns from a chopper and make drawings out of them! Also a lot of drivers remind of the game road-rash!

Now why the west is like sheep! because they usually move in a lanes! irrespective of how long the lane becomes!

  • Love के लिए साला कुछ भी करेगा !!! (Anything for love, or to make some 😛 )

    जो बीवी से करे प्यार,
    वो कैसे करे रेड लाइट पार

    और जो पति से करे प्यार
    वो भी कभी न करने दे रेड लाइट पार

I was at this red light near my house, and a young couple, recently married by the looks of it, stopped next to me… and the guy was in a hurry to cross the red light, even though there was heavier than light traffic moving around ! And the girl was just sitting behind, completely oblivious of the fact that the guy was risking both their lives just to save 30 odd seconds of stopping on the signal. The guy displayed some interesting driving skills and crossed !

I see this often !!! People who are riding pillion or sitting next to the drivers do not really object to defaults by the drivers!!!

Here is a proposed point based traffic default control system for young couples 🙂 And see if you can take it seriously 🙂

You start with 10 points in your kitty…

    – Every act of nice-ness and ethics on the road, adds 1 point to your total; and if you were over nice someday (Stopped for someone and let them walk/drive through before you, drove in the right lanes with safety first the entire day, etc) you get 2 points.

    – Every minor default(overtaking from the left, unnecessary lane change, useless honking, driving in high beams, improper parking) subtracts 1 point from your total.

    – Every major default (Not stopping on a red light, driving on the wrong side in a one way lane, parking in the no parking area, parking in front of someone else’s gate, dangerous driving, unnecessary over speeding, driving under influence) would subtract 2 points from the total.

    And then :

    • If at any time the points for a married driver goes below 5, NO SEX till he gets his total beyond 5 points
    • If a bachelor, has less than 5 points, no kisses and no other physical intimacy till he crosses 5 points again. No not even holding hands !
    • If a married lady driver is less than 5 points, take away her face wash and the perfume bottles till she gets back to more than 5 points
    • If an unmarried girl is less than 5 points, the above applies in addition to a shopping/outing ban for a week.
The ownership here lies with the people to ensure we have safer and better roads out there !!!

Oh, and the singles can enjoy 😛

  • and Heaven IS !!!!

And I did not mention it before…

Heaven is your darling (read Radha) with you… you two roaming around the roads for no apparent reason… just zipping past some traffic at times, or slowing time just to let some suckers move ahead and feel good…

    having the windows rolled up…

listening to your favorite CDs one after the other like there was no tomorrow…

Heaven is when you are with yourself and someone you love from the bottom of your heart… and you can’t figure out the different between the two 🙂

all this really makes me feel that Heaven IS…
