  • We the ________ people!

Why don’t we sit down and try to fill in the blanks?

    We  the corrupt people?

    We the emotional people?

    We the strange people?

    We the Indian people?

    We the undisciplined people?

    We the hard-working people?

    We the rich people?

    We the poor people?

    We the sensitive people?

    We the people who care?

I like to believe that we do care.. in some form or the other, and someone gets some benefit too! but our care at times is limited to that one week of inspired living right after we see a TV program like Satyamev Jayate!

Last month including yesterday, I’ve had some long conversations about what does it take for people to contribute to the welfare of society. My conversations were limited to mostly how a larger percentage of people in big corporates  are not willing to donate something as little as Rs. 100 a month to a cause.

Let’s look at the potential… for a company of about 5000 employees, I would assume that everyone is taking home atleast Rs. 10000 every month on an average. Rs. 100 would not be more than 1% of their monthly salary for atleast 60% of this population. Assuming they are ok with donating this 1% of their salary, we are looking at an average of Rs. 3,00,000 every month which can be donated to a cause. Let do some more maths.. how about looking at the annual potential for this 5000 people strong company? Going by the above calculations, this organization can donate Rs.  36,00,000 every year.

A couple of NGOs that I know need not more than Rs. 15000 per annum ensure one kid’s education all inclusive (including fee, uniform, books, and food). Time for another calculation… Rs. 36,00,000 could help sponsor 240 kids. and what does this take? Rs. 100 a month from every individual in a company of 5000 out of which only 60% people (3000) are willing to donate. The issue is that these 3000 individuals who are willing to give away Rs. 100 every month are extremely difficult to find!

There is enough information available with individuals and organizations about good NGOs, which are validated and audited against multiple parameters, and I am sure if we want we can find out atleast one NGO which is doing a good job on the ground. I know of a few personally, and I am in the process of finding out about more.

If you are reading this and wondering what can you do about it, here is what I think you can…

    • Leave a comment on this post and if you are ok  a way for me to reach out to you
    • Find atleast 1 person other than yourself who is willing to part with 100 bucks a month for an year

That’s it! I would work towards bringing the right information to the willing donors, and let them take a decision. I have been able to play an instrumental role in raising funds earlier with about 4 projects which were mostly individual driven, and am looking for support to start with another!

Let me know if you are willing to do what it takes!

  • 30on30 Again!!!!

However this time around, its Paromita who is celebrating her birthday by trying to do something for the society!
Her initiative Deepdana is aimed at raising Rs. 30000 in 30 days, by selling some of her selected photography work!
Paromita is a photographer of immense talent, and this intent of giving something back to the not so privileged, definitely warrants for a lot of support! Please do visit the initiative website, please do spread the word, please do connect back with her to contribute!
    Everything helps!!!
I am personally very happy that even though I was not able to do anything special for my birthday this year, 30on30 had an impact which is more than just the collection of Rs. 79000. Paromita is doing a 30on30 this year, and who knows there would be 10 more people who do more 30th year celebrations by trying to do something for the world! Makes all the effort absolutely worth it!!! Thank you and congratulations Paromita for keeping 30on30 alive!
  • 2009 in Pictures – March

Before you go ahead and check March photographs, make sure that you have a look at January and February pictures too….
March from the photographs looked like a month with mostly beautiful skies with occasional rain (which meant that the temperature was well above freezing) however it ended with loads of snow!!!

Views from the 13th floor of my office building… I miss this window a lot these days !!!

Like I said, it was a month of beautiful skies….
And I found some natural artwork on the ground too…
The artwork continued to my kitchen with some effort going in cooking food for myself and getting surprised with the tasty results…

This is me behind a record… taken by Preet…

And like I said, it had rained that month too… i remember this day when I wanted to go out, but just could not because it would not stop raining…
March also celebrated St. Patrick’s day, an Irish festival… This day kind of marks the entry of spring to Milwaukee too, but it was long before anything related to summer or spring came to Milwaukee… That day though sunny and happy, was very cold!!!!

I think I used to look smart in March too…photograph taken by preet…

and like I said, the month ended with loads of snow… here is a Toyota Rav4 that I had rented for a weekend in March… as you can see, there was something about 30 going on in my mind that time… I have written 30 on the window of the car…
Next is going to be April… the month when I turned 30, the month when 30on30 was launched and it turned out to be a huge success… one of the most memorable months of my life thanks to the overwhelming support that I got for the event!!!
  • Its just the Beginning !

    30On30 is over !

Let me put it a bit differently… it has just started !!!

and the first month of this beginning was a huge boost to the cause ! here are some highlights :

    – 30 on 30 website had over 2000 visitors in 30 days and more than 4000 page views

    – 57% visitors were from India, 28% from the US, 3% from the UK, and rest from Japan, Canada, Singapore, Poland, Hongkong, UAE, and some others…

    – There was also a poll on the 30on30 page which was taken by 52 people and 47 of them thought that this initiative has the potential to bring some change and 5 were not too sure

and now the most important statistics !!!!

I had thought that on my 30th birthday I would sell 30 photographs and raise Rs. 30000… Not much went as planned !!!

Through the 30 on 30 project, I managed to sell 69 prints of my pictures, and the project managed to raise Rs. 69000 !!!!

There would also be some more to this 69000 which comes from the dollar conversion, and some from the rounding off of the printing and shipping costs…

    69000 !!!!

    Ye !!!

    30000 on 30000 on 9000 !!!!

Heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, promoted, or wished for the success of 30On30…

and like I said, earlier, this is just the beginning!

  • Thank you for your support !

30on30 was a huge success ! Something that I wished for and was secretly hoping for, but did not expect !!!

Will come back with a detailed post later on how the last one month was for 30on30…

Thanks again folks, and please do visit www.30on30.net for the photographs that were on sale !

I am finally off for a small getaway this weekend after the long winters ! Will be back soon !

  • 30on30 Updates

The 30on30 Project got an overwhelming response from friends all around. Here are some of the highlights so far:

    1. Reached the initial goal of raising Rs. 30000
    2. Decided to not stop there
    3. Revised the goal to Rs. 50000 and are about 5K short of it as of today
    4. Even if we reach 50K we would try to continue raising some money till 30th April and do as much as possible

Thank you everyone who has participated, appreciated, purchased, promoted, and wished for the success of the project.

  • and she…

It had been raining all night… literally !

She had not slept for a second …

The sound of the rain drops, the sound of the wind passing through her windows, and her tears kept her awake…

The morning came… it had to…

And as she walked out of her house…

the cold breeze greeted her and said good morning…

the warm sun came out of the clouds and said a shining smiling hello…

some birds flew past her chirping all sweet nothings into her ears…

    and she… she smiled !

    and moved on…

… and before you reach any conclusions… I was not crying the last night 😛 I have been very very happy with the way 30on30 has been received ! Have responded to over 40 people, must have read/written at least 150 emails in the last three days about the 30on30 project… Have placed the first order for the the prints.. have a commitment of over Rs. 10000… have Rs. 4000 transferred as well… The month has started on a brilliant note !!!
  • Introducing Thirty on Thirty

I would be lying if I say that I have been waiting for this to happen… but there is nothing that can possibly stop it…I am talking about turning 30 !!! No it’s not my birthday today, though its just round the corner not too far in future !

I had planned a rail trip for myself originally but that really did not work out and I have no reason to complaint, but then I don’t like not being able to travel like I thought I will… anyway…

I guess at the back of my mind I was troubled by the fact that I going to turn “old” and this birthday is not memorable… and then lightening struck ( somewhere in this world) and I had an idea…

First lets go through the thoughts !

    Not so random thought 1
    I am turning 30

    Random thought 2
    April has 30 days

    Random thought 3
I have wanted to do some fund raising

    Random thought 4
I would like to sell a few photographs

    Random thought 5
    hmm… so?

    Random thought 6
    Wait a minute… why don’t I sell 30 photographs to raise 30000 rupees in these 30 days on my 30th birthday…

The thought seemed fine… the next evening I put a few thoughts together and sent it to some friends… next morning to the next evening most of them responded with very encouraging words… I realized this can work out.. and a small team was formed…

Me, Subhadip, Bhoomi and Swati got together through emails and build something together… its been a li’il tough to meet the April 1st deadline but looks like we are good to go… Need to thank Arvin David for helping out with the logo and Ashish Goel (from iTasveer.com) to help with the printing and shipping needs in India…

    please do check out http://www.30on30.net

Its my way of making this month of 2009 memorable for me…

    Hope you like it !!!!
